Pop-Up Safe Streets Report: Coconut Grove

Community support and data - all in one project.

This one-year project with the National Safety Council's Road to Zero program focused on building community support for safe streets in Coconut Grove, Florida using tactical urbanism - including a pop-up modal filter and traffic calming at Coconut Grove Elementary and Frances S. Tucker K-8 - bolstered with community engagement through various "Feedback Forum" mapping charrettes.

The project built upon an existing BikeSafe pop-up protected bike lane project in the Grove, combining the neighborhood grassroots bike bus with tactical urbanism. The initial bike lane efforts are part of a case study published at the Journal of the American Planning Association.

The results of the Road to Zero project provides data at multiple levels, establishing evidence-based recommendations for permanent infrastructure that can be put forth to prioritize vulnerable road users, reduce traffic conflicts, and strengthen neighborhood connectivity in Miami's Coconut Grove neighborhood.
